Secondary Curriculum
Welcome to the Secondary Department at Newfield School.
We want all our pupils to achieve their academic potential, develop their interests and work towards their aspirations. Alongside academic progress, we place great importance on supporting pupils’ social, emotional and personal development.
Throughout the year, pupils have opportunities to take part in a range of activities and experiences, including assemblies, educational visits, football matches, performances and celebrations. We aim to provide a positive and supportive environment where pupils can build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy a fresh start.

Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, pupils continue to develop their knowledge and skills while working towards qualifications that support their future education, training and employment.
Most pupils work towards nationally recognised qualifications, including GCSEs and vocational awards. We also offer Functional Skills qualifications at Level 1 and Level 2, helping pupils develop essential English and Mathematics skills.

We aim to provide a range of pathways that help pupils recognise their strengths, achieve success and prepare for the next stage of their lives.
Alternative Provision and Personalised Pathways
We recognise that some pupils benefit from a more personalised approach to their education. Where appropriate, pupils may access alternative provision off-site, giving them opportunities to develop practical skills, improve engagement and work towards recognised qualifications.
We work with a range of providers to offer individualised learning pathways.
Brooms Cross Fisheries
Brooms Cross Fisheries offers pupils the opportunity to develop practical skills through angling. This provision supports pupils to build confidence, self-esteem and independence while working towards a recognised qualification in angling.
Reform
Reform supports pupils to develop their personal development and employability skills. Pupils work towards a Level 1 or Level 2 King's Trust Award, helping them build confidence and prepare for future education, training and employment.
Engage and Change
Engage and Change provides a supportive environment where pupils can build confidence, self-esteem and positive relationships. Pupils also have opportunities to work towards Functional Skills qualifications.
Mode Training
Mode Training offers specialist vocational pathways across areas including hairdressing, beauty and music technology. These courses are supported by opportunities to develop life skills, employability skills and preparation for future work or further training.
CST (Star SLA)
CST provides alternative education for pupils aged 14–16, with a focus on practical learning and vocational skills. Pupils have opportunities to work towards nationally recognised Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in construction.
Through our partnerships with alternative providers, we aim to ensure that pupils access appropriate learning opportunities, develop their strengths and make progress towards positive destinations beyond school.
Curriculum Quality and Assessment
We are committed to continually reviewing and improving our curriculum so that it meets the needs of our pupils.
We work collaboratively with other schools and specialist partnerships across Sefton to review assessment, share effective practice and support consistent approaches to measuring pupil progress. This includes working through LINCs and other local networks.
